Dos and Don’ts
It can be challenging to turn an amateur job into a professional installation as easy as it sounds to wallpaper a home. Here are a few of our favorite tips to help:

You should keep the room at 65 degrees while the wallpaper is drying or curing to the wall. A room too hot or cold will prevent the wallpaper from adhering properly or not adhering at all in more extreme cases.

Trim wallpaper under your electric outlets, fixtures, and switches. Make sure you’re loosening or removing them from the wall so that you can apply the wallpaper under the edge of the faceplate or the fixture. This will help give you a professional finish. Wallpaper that’s trimmed to the edge of the plate tends to show its age quickly because of frequent usage that will cause pealing and exposing the wall underneath. Also, please turn the power off before starting your work whenever you are dealing with outlets, switches, or fixtures.

Finally, not all rooms in the house are created equally. Some rooms are perfect for wallpaper. Bathrooms and Kitchens fall into a slightly higher scale of difficulty and required forethought. These rooms often come with moisture challenges caused by steam, water, humidity, and grease. Because water and wallpaper don’t get along right out of the box, you need to avoid high moisture areas or apply a sealant to the wallpaper to prevent moisture issues with your installation. If you don’t have proper ventilation, wallpaper may not work at all. Also, beware of things like tub, shower, and sink edges. Splashes, spills, and sprays and not ideal for your wallpaper installation.

Start small and work your way up
Starting in a small room or bathroom can be a great place to experiment with wallpaper and get confidence in your product choices and installation skills. You can also try partial applications to see how that affects a wall. The benefit of a smaller room is that it’s a small space and doesn’t matter as much as a living room or kitchen. The more significant advantage is that you get to see a complete application of the wallpaper without a tremendous amount of work. It would be awful to wallpaper your living room only to discover you don’t like it and want to replace it with something different. Working with a smaller space like a bathroom will help give you a sense of the final product without a huge commitment of time and materials.
